As someone who is lactose-free, I regularly miss pizza. Cheesy, melty, greasy pizza. Because that will just about kill me now to eat, I make my own. One variation I love to make, is french bread pizza. Thick toasted bread topped with sauce and stacked high with veggies, you really can't go wrong. Plus, it's super quick, and very easy. Let's dive in and make our own, shall we? (Don't worry, you can put cheese on yours, even if I don't on mine.)
Ingredients:
+ 1 loaf of French or Italian bread. (I actually like the Italian loaves better, they're wider. Wider = more pizza. More pizza = BEST.)+ Pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, any flavor, whatever kind you want.
+ Your choice of toppings -- for this we used pepperoni, canadian bacon, veggies and pineapple.
+ Shredded Cheese (for you lucky lactose eaters! I kind of hate you right now.)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400° F.2. Cut loaf in half lengthwise as if you're making a giant sub sandwich and place the two halves crust side down on a baking sheet. Slather each half with as much sauce as you want. Keep in mind, if you go light on sauce, the bread will absorb some of it.
3. Add your toppings. Sprinkle with cheese last to help the toppings stay on. I recommend a decent layer, because cheese is divine.
++++(If you're lactose-free skip the cheese. It's still super good without cheese, I promise.)
6. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Then cut and serve!
Note: you can cut the bread into four pieces like we did to make it easier to serve, or if you want to make 4 differently topped pizzas. The possibilities are endless, just use your creativity!
Serves 4 people, or 2 hungry people. Including prep time, takes about 25 minutes.
Options I want to try next:
+ Spinach, tomato, and artichoke+ All meats with tomato
+ Pineapple, and onion
+ BBQ chicken
+ ALL THE PIZZAS
+++ YOUR TURN: What kind of pizza toppings are your favorite? What is your favorite french bread pizza to make? Share below in the comments.
I use to make this as a kid with my mom! Great memories.
ReplyDeleteI agree, my mom is the one who taught me how to make it!
DeleteDefinitely pinning this for later! I have never thought of this, but as a HUGE bread fan (okay, I love carbs in general) haha this looks right up my alley!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing :)
PS - I feel you on the cheese. My stomach doesn't take lactose very well, but I can't stop eating it!!

Bread and I are basically best friends. This is one of the easiest recipes to make too. You'll have to come back and comment if you make it, to let me know how it went!
DeleteOh, how easy and quick! I will be using this for an evening when we need a quick dinner!
ReplyDeleteServe with a quick side salad and you've got a complete meal!
DeleteI could eat this for dinner any day! Yum!
ReplyDeleteHmmm... Should we see if we can make this the new fad diet?
DeleteLooks great! I am dairy-free and have tried those lactose-free shredded cheeses for when we have pizza night at home, but I just haven't found any brands that actually taste good. The cheese-free looks great too!
ReplyDeleteI've tried the vegan cheeses. They just aren't the same as a good sharp cheddar or shredded mozzarella. :( so I avoid them.
DeleteThis is like Boudin's pizza which is on sourdough bread rolls in San Francisco and it is so good! Can't wait to try this variation next friday movie & pizza night we have with our kids!
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to let me know how it turns out.
DeleteI'm all about making food at home, but I have missed the frozen french bread pizzas because they were easy to heat up and surprisingly satisfying. Thanks for sharing this at home version so I can make one whenever I want.
ReplyDeleteThese are so much better. You will love it. Plus you can make it your own way!
DeleteAlright... I love french bread. I also love pizza. Did I ever, in the history of my life, think of putting the two together? Of course not. This is the future. I'm totally trying this when I can use my teeth again! You're awesome, thanks for this!
